A change of seasons can be exciting, but it can also be a hassle to switch out your wardrobe each time the weather begins to change. This process can be daunting if you don’t have a plan in place. In this blog, we will share tips and tricks for editing your closet, organizing, and simplifying your space each season.

Step #1: Pack & Store Last Season’s Clothing

Clothes should be stored appropriately when changing seasons. It should be stain-free and freshly laundered for best results and stored in a lidded bin to keep things dust-free. You can fold or roll the items but don’t over-fill the bins so your items still have room to breathe.

If you have the space, off-season items can be hung in the back of the closet. Otherwise, place them in a lidded bin and store at the top of a closet, whether in the master or another closet, until it is needed again next year.

Tip: as you pull out items you do not need right now, store them in their groupings in an organized way. This will make unpacking and organizing them much easier in the future.

Step #2: Sort & Declutter Current Season Clothing

Grab the current season items and get to work. If you cleaned them before storing them, then it’s up to you whether you want to go ahead and launder them again or just put them away. Start by sorting items into categories such as short sleeves, long sleeves, sweaters, and so on.

This is a great time to decide if some of the items still work for you or are too worn; declutter what you no longer need and prepare to organize the rest.

Step #3: Organize & Reset Your Closet

Continue sorting into categories. In addition to style of clothing, you can organize by occasion, temperature, or even color. You can get as specific as you want, but the main thing to focus on is categorizing according to what makes sense for you and your lifestyle.

Also consider: Do you require special hangers, bins, or storage to use your space and access your items well? Decide what is best to hang, fold, and store in your dresser. Answering all these questions will help prepare you to put items up in the best places in your space.

Step #4: Decide Where to Store Your Clothes

What should be folded in a dresser vs hanging? Items in a dresser are best if they do not wrinkle easily and are more on the casual side. Items such as jeans, workout gear, leggings, and pajamas are all good choices to store in a dresser.

Ultimately, decide what your preference is and what you need access to most. Hanging items are more easily seen, and things that are not used as much could also be stored in a dresser. That’s the thing about organizing–it needs to fit your needs.

Step #5: Don’t Forget Shoes and Accessories

Don’t forget to sort and categorize shoes and accessories as well. Organizing your best fall/winter belts, jewelry, shoes, hats, and scarves is a great way to be prepared for the season without searching for something you need once the weather changes for good. Depending on your accessory needs, there are specialized organizing solutions. Find some storage and display options that work for your items so they are easy to get to.
