In today’s world of “go big or go home,” our shopping habits can slowly add up to an overcrowded home filled with clutter and chaos that is neither used nor needed.

Today we will be sharing tips for sustainable shopping habits to keep your home organization in check…

Tip #1: Rethink Buying in Bulk

In society today, buying in bulk is super common. Where does buying in bulk make sense vs. what should only be purchased as needed? Some items, like toilet paper, make sense to buy in bulk. It is something that the whole family uses on a daily basis and families tend to go through it pretty quickly.

As long as you have the space, this makes sense to buy in bulk. Other items, like food that you need to store and eat by a certain date, may not. Sometimes it is a scarcity mindset that leads to buying backups of things unnecessarily. It is a good rule of thumb to be thoughtful and only buy in bulk when it makes sense for you.

Tip #2: Stick to a List

Buying impulsively is a temptation. How many of us succumb to the BOGO deals? We feel like we need to buy items that we would not normally purchase just because it is a good deal.

We recommend shopping with a list and a plan of what you need to prevent emotion-based shopping. This will make the decision-making easier and you will come home with less unneeded items.

Tip #3: Quality over Quantity

When purchasing, be mindful of better brands and buy quality over quantity. Think about better packaging, ingredients, and function that make sense for your family. If you prefer food stored in glass, can you skip the brands that package in plastic since you will transfer things into glass anyway?

Tip #4: Plan Out Your Purchases

Often we make rash decisions when purchasing items that are made without measuring, trying on, color matching, etc. Then we find out what we bought is the wrong item. At this point, we are left with either spending time returning the item or wasting money and space in our home with an item that cannot be used. Plan ahead (where applicable) and buy the correct item once.

Mindfully shop and plan ahead for your needs now to avoid purchases based on poor planning, emotions, or future aspirations (i.e. new career, weight loss, new home, etc.)

Key Takeaways for Smarter, More Sustainable Shopping

  • Buy in bulk only when it makes sense. Essentials like toilet paper are smart bulk purchases, but avoid stockpiling perishable items that lead to waste.
  • Use a shopping list to stay focused and prevent impulse buys.
  • Invest in durable, eco-friendly brands and packaging that fit your family’s lifestyle.
  • Measure, compare, and double-check before buying to avoid returns, wasted money, and clutter.

Following the tips above will help take the extra money spent and the extra clutter from buying things you do not need to a minimum.
