There is an increased appeal to aging in place and staying in your beloved home as long as possible. This allows you to stay in your home that is familiar and feels like home. However, to do this, there are some things to consider. A certain level of organization and planning is needed to make this happen long term. In today’s blog, let us discuss tips on aging in place.
Tip #1: Prioritize First-Floor Living
If you have a two-story home, then you have to be thoughtful about what will make the stay there easier for you. We recommend moving all the essentials to the first floor and repurpose spaces as needed.
Do you need to add a bathroom? Or widen doors or add storage space? Do you want the second floor to be made into a perfect oasis for family or caregivers when they are staying with you? Consider all these options to make your living space the most functional and safe place for you.

Tip #2: Lighten the Load Over Time
If you pare down belongings over time, it is less overwhelming and easier for you when making decisions. We recommend baby steps. Start with one room, one shelf at a time, and donate, gift, or throw away belongings that you can no longer use.
Gradually work through each space as you are able. We suggest getting rid of items if they are not serving you, not adding to an off site storage unit or filling the garage. The more you can create space for you to live in well, the better.

Tip #3: Plan for Alternative Mobility
When you decide to remodel, consider getting professional recommendations and suggestions for wheelchair and walker friendly floor plans. Allow strategically spaced furniture so there is more room to walk and move safely.
This is also a good time to consider needs for kitchen and bathroom accessibility too. Planning ahead, even if you do not need these things right now, will pay off in the long run for you to stay in your home as long as possible.

Tip #4: Organize Important Paperwork
This is also a great time to decide your wishes and legally record them in wills, advanced directives, and important documents. These should be stored all in one place, and family should be aware of where these documents are.
We suggest a filing cabinet or bin that is the home for all your important documents. Have one or two trusted family members know where these are and how to implement your wishes as needed.

Tip #5: Streamline Storage Solutions
Over time, we would suggest simplifying storage and decluttering each room and closet so you have the most usable space for all your function and needs. When organization is complete, your items that you use daily should be easily accessible and not stacked too high (think limitations down the road).
If you need help with this organization and decisions on the best place to store your items, consult a friend or a professional who can help.

Organization definitely involves more than just decluttering. Living a tidy life makes things easier for them and for their family down the road. We cannot stress enough to start earlier downsizing and going through items. This is a gift to yourself for a more functional home as you age, as well as your family.
