Mudrooms are wonderful spaces to have, but without a plan, they can become the family dumping ground as they enter the house each day. This can cause chaos, clutter, and stress–not what you want to see as you walk in from a long day.

Today on the blog, we will discuss 4 tips for organizing and systematizing the mudroom for spring.

Tip #1: Define the Purpose of Your Mudroom

A mudroom can be an important space, and how you use it matters. We recommned assessing how you use the space on a regular basis and then reorganizing and planning the space specifically to help with those tasks. Do you want to store shoes and bookbags in this space?

Organize to make this easier for your family. Adding wall hooks to use the vertical space could help, as well as bins or cubbies for shoes. There are always solutions for your specific needs.

Tip #2: Choose Smart Storage Solutions

Before you try to purchase specific storage solutions, plan, measure, and really think through what you need to store, how much, and what physical space is available. Once you are clear on these answers, you can purchase items that are best for your space and your family’s needs. After the space is organized, maybe a family meeting is needed to discuss where things go. You can even label bins for each kid’s items.

Tip #3: Manage Moisture and Seasonal Transitions

Mudrooms are notoriously damp because of outerwear and being closest to an exit of the home. We encourage you to find items to keep the floor and room moisture-free. Washable floor coverings/rugs and a dehumidifier are great options to start.

Also, as seasons change, launder outerwear, give the space a good cleaning, and swap out the winter boots and coats for this season’s items like swim gear and sandals.

Tip #4: Style with Functional Accessories

Just because the mudroom is a really functional space in your home doesn’t mean it can’t look good too. The hooks, rugs, and bins you add can be beautiful, well-thought-out, and match your overall look for your home. There is nothing more welcoming for you or guests to walk into an organized and functional mudroom that also looks pretty and matches the rest of the home decor.
