Congrats on your growing family! As professional organizers, we have worked with many families over the years just like yours. It is a fun and exciting time for you! Having an organized plan will help you through the transition. Today on the blog, we will share 7 nesting tips for organizing your home and building a functional baby space that will make the transition to parenthood slightly less stressful…
Tip #1: Declutter & Simplify Your Space
The months leading up to baby are a great time to declutter, reset, and simplify your space. Do babies require a lot of stuff? Sometimes. Can extra stuff create overwhelm? Yes. Does pairing down other belongings help the transition before baby items arrive? Absolutely!
Pairing down other areas can create needed extra space to work with so you can set up exactly what you need in this stage of life. Also, less clutter equals less stress and less mental overwhelm, which is a great benefit as well with a little one on the way.

Tip #2: Choose Multifunctional Furniture Pieces
When choosing baby furniture, choose pieces that are multifunctional and that can grow with them. Here are some examples: a changing station atop a dresser, a crib that converts to a toddler bed, and closet storage that can grow with them. Being thoughtful when you choose your little one’s furniture can save you time and money in the long run.

Tip #3: Create Organizational Systems
Create an organizing strategy where every item in your space has a home. Consider storing items where they will be used most. Random piles can add stress and make things difficult to find when you need them. Creating systems can make life easier for sleep-deprived parents.

Tip #4: Use Labels to Simplify Routines
Labeling drawers, caddies, and more can help simplify routines. This will help everyone in the family find what you need, know where it needs to go back to, and know when something needs to be restocked. This not only gives you peace of mind but also allows others to assist more easily when mom or dad needs a rest.

Tip #5: Prep and Wash in Advance
As you begin receiving new baby items, you can sanitize items like bottles and pacifiers and lander items like blankets and burp cloths ahead of time. Then store them safely for use without additional washing needed. Small steps leading up to baby’s arrival can make a big difference.

Tip #6: Clean Out the Freezer
Freshen up and clean out the fridge and freezer. This will allow space for prepared meals in advance to use in those first few weeks, and space for gifted meals after the baby comes. Also, pumped breastmilk needs to be stored in the freezer. You will be so thankful for extra space here.

Tip #7: Set Up Baby Stations Throughout the Home
Helpful, well-stocked stations throughout the house can be great when baby arrives. A postpartum station in the main bathroom, a bottle station in the kitchen, and changing stations on each floor of the home can be super helpful. Again, store items where you will use them. Having these prepared will save a lot of extra time and make things easy to access in the first few weeks with a new baby.

Having a plan is good, and the ability to pivot when needed is just as important. Flexibility, not perfection, is the key to happiness and success with a newborn. If planning and organizing aren’t your thing, or you are already overwhelmed, call a professional to help you set up your space. There is help out there. One small step at a time, and you will be ready for baby in no time.
